Mariposa is a nice country town with good range of shops, services and food options for its size (including a supermarket), even in our early spring visiting time. This is due to its proximity to Yosemite NP about 70km away (our reason for visiting). If using the YARTs bus service to access the park its a great base.

Mariposa is about as close you can get to Yosemite without staying in the park, but it's still an hour drive from the valley. This is fine if you're visiting the park for 1 or 2 days, but after 2 days, you'll definitely have had enough of the driving. The town itself is very cute and has tons of nice places to eat. Mariposa is a small town, nothing much to see. We stayed there to visit Yosemite. But Mariposa has no mobile coverage, Had we known that beforehand, we'd have stayed in Yosemite village, inside the park, which has good mobile coverage.

Great little town, very hot in the summer. Near the Yosemite Park entrance that is closest to Yosemite Valley. It is historic with several nice shops and restaurants. Check out The Grove House for a great selection of Micro Brews and great food. Excellent mixed drinks and live music as well! My wife and I made a last minute getaway for a mini-honeymoon and Mary was kind enough to place us in a honeymoon suite with a ton of charm and character. Friday night was a little loud outside of the hotel, but we had no difficulty drowning out the sound with the well-functioning AC.
